Palme d’Or Blog #2: Uncle Boonmee [2010]
Saw this one a few nights ago at the Charles. It was everything I want in a movie. I love really slow pacing. It forces me to stare at something for a long time and really consider it. And every shot in this movie was so beautiful that after I left the theater I felt like I had rubbed one of these all over my eyeballs. I also love really bizarre plots that really never explain themselves. This one had all kinds of supernatural mumbo jumbo that I gush over. The use of natural light and scenery was fantastic [those shadows!]. One reviewer described the film as a ‘floating world’ which I totally get. I also really appreciate that the overall quiet feel of the movie was never broken by some kinda raucous climax. I even liked the ending, which threw most of the people I saw it with for a loop. This is kind of a terrible review because I just enjoyed the thing so much. The pacing and imagery was just really great and I had a pretty visceral connection with it. Maybe this movie isn’t for everyone but I absolutely loved it.
Tidbit: This was the first Thai movie to win the award. I look forward to watching other movies from director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Whose name I have definitely committed to memory.
